| SCM now is the official home of the Rhode Island Red, the famous breed created by a Rhode Island farmer more than 150 years ago by the mating of a domestic hen with a red Malay rooster. Dr. Wayne Durfee (below, left), a retired professor at URI and a museum volunteer, is overseeing the project. SCM now has about 60 hens. For much of the year, they lay about 35 eggs a day, which are donated to area organizations. Each year, in the first week or so of July peaking on July 4 our industrious hens (with just a wee bit of help from a rooster or two) supply us with enough eggs to produce about 100 baby chicks. Below: left, some of our Red hens; center, three of our proud roosters; right, up close and personal. |
