May 2024 Issue
Spring greetings! We are preparing for another great season here at South County Museum and we are so excited to start welcoming visitors back to campus! The 2024 season will include a variety of exciting new offerings and events.
Members and anyone curious to know more about the museum are welcome to join us on Wednesday, May 8th at 5pm for our annual meeting. The meeting will take place in the Metz Exhibition Hall, and we will discuss museum operations and plans for the upcoming season.
To kick-off the season, the museum will be hosting Night at the Museum, a Gilded Age themed party. The event will take place May 17th, 6pm-8pm. This family friendly and free event will include games, raffles, live music, food, drinks, and more. Costumes and fancy dress are encouraged, but not required. Click here for more information and to rsvp. Spots are limited.
This year, we are also thrilled to be offering new classes in our maker spaces. Visit the workshop tab on our website to see which classes are currently open for registration. We will be adding more classes as the season progresses, so stay tuned! The first class in our season’s line up is May 29th and will be taught by our director, Rebecca Kelly. Students will learn the art of fabric collage and embroidery, and leave with the skills and materials to stitch their own fabric iris.
If you missed the announcement last season, we are very excited to welcome Rebecca as the museum’s new director. In addition to her role as director, Rebecca is also a lecturer in the Department of Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design at the University of Rhode Island.
Previously she has worked as a textile conservator at the Preservation Society of Newport County, and the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Although she started only recently as director, Rebecca has already greatly and positively impacted South County Museum. From developing a fiber shed maker space, to devising new events & programming, we are so grateful to have her leading our team.
Keep your eyes on our calendar & events page to stay up to date with all the 2024 season events.
