June 2024 Issue
The 2024 season has officially started! Coming up we have a lot of educational and fun events that we are excited to share with you.
on June 12th from 6pm to 8pm join us for a special evening opening of Charting History, a traveling panel exhibition that tells one cohesive, chronological, and thematic narrative of Rhode Island’s history. It follows the major threads of commerce, conflict, and conscience to tell the stories of RI and the people who have lived here throughout history up to the present-day. This exhibit is designed to introduce visitors to Rhode Island’s rich and varied past. There will be a brief presentation by South County Museum Director Rebecca Kelly at 7:30pm on how Charting History dovetails with the Metz Exhibition Hall's re-curated exhibits.
Charting History will be on view in the Metz Exhibition Hall from June 7th-June 22nd during regular museum operating hours.
This exhibition, a joint project of the Newport Historical Society and the Rhode Island Historical Society, was made possible by a grant from the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust.
We are also introducing Family Nights at the Museum! Starting June 26th, the Museum will be open Wednesdays from 3pm-7pm. Come picnic on the grounds after a day at the beach and enjoy exploring the museum during the cooler evening hours. Our first Family Night will feature a performance by Ladies of the Rolling Pin!
The Ladies will be performing from 6:30pm-7:15pm. Keep your eyes on our events page for future Family Night special events.
There are also some exciting workshops in our maker spaces coming up this month.
June 1st, guest instructor Sarah Short will be teaching Abstract Collage and Printmaking. On June 8th, Museum Director Rebecca Kelly will be exploring Dyeing with Natural Primaries. Guest instructor Eric Swanson, will be diving into the art of Woodturning on June 29th. Make sure to check out our workshops page for future class updates!
Finally, thank you to everyone who attended Night at the Museum, our opening night celebration and the museum's 90th birthday party. The festivities included games, raffles, demonstrations in our maker spaces, and music from the South County Jammers. We are so grateful to everyone who attended and made the night so special!
